This movie is the grittier more chaotic version of another Anderson’s movies (Wes Anderson). The characters are goofy in a good way where they juxtapose against a dirty, intense political satirical world. One Battle After Another might be PTA’s fastest paced film. It harkens back to last year’s Oscar winner Anora. It opens sharp and never lets you off the hook. The cast in the earlier parts didn’t grip me too much, except for Sean Penn’s oddball militarized energy. I find the romantic chemistry between DiCaprio and newcomer Teyana Taylor unconvincing. Separately they serve the story fine, but together I couldn’t see pass DiCaprio just being his usual whacky self in other movies. I find his character and performance both a bit lackluster compare to other characters in the film. The film’s strongest parts are its heightened depiction of militarized white supremacy. It is almost absurd in its portrayal, but PTA manages to ground the direction enough to make the suspense really tick. Whenever they are on screen, you feel a strong sense of tension and urgency that glues the contrasting tone together.PTA is also very good at writing naturalistic and interesting dialogue exchange. His characters might be absurd and often very dramatic to the point of caricature, but he manages to ground them in a way that makes them very believable. Almost like you are watching an eccentric personalities from documentaries. As always I’m not the biggest fan of how PTA uses music. It is very subjective. But his love for atonal piano music as a usual go-to style is often counter immersive to how I connect with movies. The direction in the movie is generally very strong. I love his dedication to the filmic gritty look, though this time the close ups are a bit too overdone in my opinion. My favourite scene is the last chase scene, featuring some of the best uses of long lens shots, simply masterfully done. The visual storytelling, use of terrain, and pacing are insanely well crafted in that utterly intense sequence. This movie to me, adds to the collection of “good movies that I don’t wanna watch again”. I probably wouldn’t watch it outside of being a theatrical experience.Verdict: 77
